Note that this approach is distinct form the 'bottom up' approach of trying to extract useful information or codes from rastergrams of spike activity, which is extremely difficult without knowing beforehand what you expect to find. Typically people resort to computing averaged quantities over raster plots (e.g. ISI histograms, correlation plots, instantaneous activity over the population), which loses most of the embedded information.
